SAVATAGE

Más que una banda de metal, Savatage ha creado un sonido de majestuosa ingenuidad, un enigma auditivo sin límites de profundida y llenos de vigor. Sus inicios se remontan a 1981 cuando los hermanos Oliva (Jon y Criss) forman esta banda, originalmente llamada Avatar. En 1983, lanzan de manera independiente su álbum debut “City Beneath The Surface”, trabajo que sorprendió a la escena hard rock y heavy metal de todo el mundo por la amalgama de sensaciones melódicas, buenos arreglos y un despliegue de artillería pesada. Había en este álbum mucho del clásico heavy a la Iron Maiden y Judas Priest, lo que sonaba prometedor para una banda recién agrupada.

Posterior a la edición del mini álbum “The Dungeons Are Calling”, donde mezclaban los altos tonos vocales de Jon Oliva, heavy riffing a la Judas Priest y una lírica de imaginería cuasi-Dio, vendría “Power Of The Night”, su segundo disco y debut en Atlantic (1985), seguido de “Fight For The Rock” de 1986, placa en la que intentaron tomar un desvío facilista comercial que afortunadamente fracasó estrepitosamente. Sin embargo, no sería hasta 1987 con su placa “Hall Of The Mountain King” que Savatage vería la luz del éxito en todo el mundo, a través de un sonido progresivo con variadas texturas compositivas que marcan la singularidad de la banda. De hecho, ese disco estuvo dentro de las mejores producciones de ese año en la mayoría de los medios especializados.

En 1990 publican “Gutter Ballet”, que mantenía la fama de su antecesor e incluso entraba a tallar en un plano conceptual y de alto vuelo artístico, con el afianzamiento de una dinámica de hard rock con baladas atmosféricas. Continuando su camino por el virtuosismo, Savatage lanza una dramática contra respuesta al disco anterior con otro concepto opera rock titulado “Streets”, utilizando orquestación y una acabada producción, como se destaca en su primer single, ‘Jesus Saves’. “Edge Of Thorns”, editado en 1993, reune los dos sucesos más importantes en la vida y carrera de la banda. Entra en escena el prodigioso cantante Zachary Stevens, dejando en el puesto de “DT” a Jon Oliva, y es el último del virtuoso guitarra líder, Criss Oliva, quien pereció en un infortunado accidente automovilístico en Creedence, Florida. A pesar de este duro golpe, su hermano Jon pensó continuar con la carrera musical de Savatage y mantener por siempre vivo el legado de Criss. Alex Skolnick (Testament) fue el reemplazante que llegó para participar en el disco “Handful of Rain” (1994) y “Dead Winter Dead “ (1995), de las que se desprendían notables tributos a la memoria de Criss. Tres años más tarde se publica el disco “The Wake Of Magellan”, nueva rock opera con un toque mayor de aires a musical de Broadway y que cuenta la historia de un viejo marino que le pide al océano morir de la manera más romántica: dejando que su pequeño bote se lo devore el mar junto con él.

Para dedicarse a su familia y a su profesión, Stevens deja la banda justo antes de entrar en la preproducción de Poets And Madmen, del 2001, álbum que vuelve a presentar a Oliva solo en las voces.

En la actualidad, Savatage se encuentra en receso indefinido y con varios de sus músicos desarrollando su música en proyectos paralelos como el cuádruple-platino Trans Siberian Orchestra, y Jon Oliva's Pain.
